From Tina Turner to Regina George: Inside 130 Years of the Iconic Louis Vuitton Monogram

December 29, 2025

A monogram may be a simple concept, but it's one that has come to define over a century of luxury design atLouis Vuitton. Originally designed in 1896 by Georges Vuitton following the death of his father, Louis Vuitton, the first monogrammed canvas immediately cemented the distinct legacy of the French maison. The monogram "is more than just a pattern," explains Pierre-Louis Vuitton, the great-great-grandson of Georges. "It's the very essence of Louis Vuitton and the culmination of 40 years of relentless research and dedication by the house to craft an unmistakable identity." On the eve of 2026, 130 years on, that sentiment still rings true.

Throughout the 20th century, the monogram took on a life of its own, becoming central to the visual narrative of the house. From trunks to hatboxes, the dissemination of the LV logo neatly coincided with the global expansion of the brand, as demonstrated by the opening of the Louis Vuitton store on the Champs-Élysées in 1914 and the subsequent Osaka, Seoul, and Hong Kong flagships in 1978.

le voyage en train: dessin publicitaire, 1929 ; des bagages rigides en toile monogram (malles, secretaires) sont entreposes sur un chariot sur le quai d'une gare, pres d'une locomotive

Travel goods and accessories may be the foundation of Louis Vuitton's rich history, but it's the iconic handbag silhouettes that solidified the monogram as a fashion staple in pop culture. The Speedy, Keepall, and Noé bags were all introduced in the early 1930s and gained popularity in the second half of the 20th century—though they still retain the same timeless appeal now as they did almost 100 years ago. Now it's difficult to look back at celebrity style without spotting a flash of the monogram, whether that be Tina Turner's duffel or Regina George's covetable limited-edition Takashi Murakami cherry-blossom pochette inMean Girls.

For the pattern's 100th anniversary in 1996, the brand tapped Azzedine Alaïa, Manolo Blahnik, Isaac Mizrahi, Sybilla, and more to create their own interpretations. This creative partnership set the stage for further iconic collaborations across numerous creative directors down the line, including Takashi Murakami, Stephen Sprouse, Yayoi Kusama, and eventually even Supreme in 2017.

"As we celebrate its 130th anniversary, we honor its past while embracing its future, carried forward through icons passed from generation to generation: the Alma, Speedy, Keepall, Neverfull and Noé," Vuitton says. To fête this next anniversary, the house will stage a series of global exhibitions and limited-edition artistic collaborations dedicated to the enduring influence of the monogram. "It remains a canvas for innovation, a blank slate to express the creativity of Louis Vuitton's artistic and creative directors," Vuitton adds. "It stands as a testament to our heritage, and as a symbol that continues to resonate in the world."

It's to the point that I have had to take daily medicine. I was looking for alternatives as I don't want to have to "pop pills" every single time I get a headache. I'm also one that if I don't take medicine right away, the migraine/headache develops to the point where I feel nauseous and can't even speak at times. Smell is a trigger and for those who are sensitive to smells especially mint, this is no issue at all! I've used it a total of 3 times so far and it's worked every time which is incredible! If I don't take strong medicine (excedrin or prescribed medicine), nothing works. Im ecstatic and released to have found an more natural alternative." -Jessica

FBI hopes to claw back $400k worth of poached lobster meat

FBI hopes to claw back $400k worth of poached lobster meat

Law enforcement remains shellshocked as the FBI investigates a heist involving a truck in Massachusetts carrying $400,000 worth of lobster meat destined for Costco stores in Illinois and Minnesota.

Dylan Rexing, the CEO of Rexing Companies, a freight broker based in Evansville, Indiana, told USA TODAY the incident occurred on Dec. 12. The shipment, a truckload of about 40,000 pounds of lobster meat, was scheduled to be picked up from a warehouse in Taunton, Massachusetts around 2 p.m.

But by 4 p.m., Rexing said his company worried the shipment had been handed off to the wrong person after the suspect allegedly turned off the GPS tracking.

"In this instance, we hired someone we thought was legitimate, but the legitimate carrier company was being impersonated by someone else in a very sophisticated way," Rexing claimed, noting that criminals access software used by freight brokers to pose as carriers.

A volunteer with the Helgoland Biological Institute tosses an adult female European lobster into the North Sea before also releasing baby lobsters on Aug. 3, 2013 off the coast of Helgoland Island, Germany.

The bandits changed the name on the side of the truck and created a counterfeit digital driver's license, he alleged.

"Definitely organized crime, no question," Rexing added. While trying to file a police report with the Taunton Police Department, Rexing said he discovered another large shipment of crab had been stolen in a similar incident on Dec. 2.

"In a 10-day period, two loads of seafood are missing from the same location in a small town."

When it comes to why someone would potentially steal such a large quantity of lobster, Rexing says organized gangs often sell products like this at a lower price and pocket the difference. For a shipment like the one at the center of this crime, the profit could reach $200,000, he said.

In the end, it's Rexing's business, Costco, and the insurance company that'll be stuck footing the bill for the lost merchandise. Even if police can retrieve the product, it won't be fit for resale following the theft.

USA TODAY contacted Costco and the Taunton Police Department for information.

Rexing says that the high number of thefts like these will end up costing consumers more at the grocery store, as companies charge for lost merchandise and for expenses related to preventing robberies.

"This is happening every day in our industry; it's not just me," said Rexing. "We can't eat these losses, our customers can't eat these losses without passing that cost on somewhere."

Australian police find no evidence of 'broader terrorist cell' in Bondi Beach antisemitic shooting

Australian police find no evidence of 'broader terrorist cell' in Bondi Beach antisemitic shooting

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — An investigation that extended to the Philippines of two men accused of shooting dead 15 people at a SydneyJewish festivalhas found no evidence that they were part of a "broader terrorist cell," police said on Tuesday.

Sydney residents Sajid Akram, 50, and his 24-year-old son Naveed Akram spent most of November in Davao City in the southern Philippines, Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett said.

They returned on a flight from Manila on Nov. 29. Two weeks later, they are accused of killing 15 and wounding another 40 in a mass shooting that targeted a Hannukah festival at Bondi Beach.

Philippine National Police determined the pair rarely left their hotel during the visit, Barrett said.

"There is no evidence to suggest they received training or underwent logistical preparation for their alleged attack," Barrett told reporters.

"These individuals are alleged to have acted alone. There is no evidence to suggest these alleged offenders were part of a broader terrorist cell, or were directed by others to carry out an attack. However, I want to be clear, I am not suggesting that they were there for tourism," Barrett added.

Barrett did not detail a motive for the visit, which began on Nov. 1.

Police allege the pair were inspired by the Islamic State group. The southern Philippines once drew small numbers offoreign militants aligned with the Islamic State group or al-Qaidato train in a secessionist conflict involving minority Muslims in the largely Catholic nation.

Barrett said she was limited in what she could disclose about the investigation in the Philippines because she did not want to prejudice Naveed Akram's trial.

He has yet to enter pleas todozens of chargesincluding 15 counts of murder and one of committing a terrorist act. Police shot him in the abdomen during a gunfight at Bondi on Dec. 14 and he spent a week in a hospital before he was transferred to a prison. Police shot his father dead at Bondi.

Authorities are promising the largest police presence ever at New Year's Eve festivities at Sydney Harbor on Wednesday. More than 2,500 officers will be on duty. Many will be openly carrying automatic rifles, a sight rarely seen on Sydney streets.

The first police responders to the Bondi massacre were armed with Glock pistols that lacked the lethal range of the Akrams' rifles and shotguns. Two police officers were among the wounded.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns said the state was not moving toward a more militarized police force in response to the attack.

"Given we've just had the worst terrorism event in Australia's history inside the last month, it would be self-evidently the case that things need to change and the security needs to change," Minns said.

"I understand that there'll be some people that oppose this or regard it as the militarization of the police. My sense is far more families would fully support that kind of police operation because they will feel far safer in that environment," Minns added.

More than 1 million revelers crowd the waterfront each year to see a world-famous fireworks display centered on the Sydney Harbor Bridge.

Minns said he was concerned that any reduction in crowd numbers would be interpreted by extremists as a victory.

"It's an opportunity to thumb our nose at the terrorists and their ideology that really would have us living in a ball and not celebrating this beautiful city. So this is an opportunity to live your life and show defiance to that kind of ideology," Minns said.

The Bondi victims will be commemorated with one minute of silence at 11 p.m. on Wednesday when four images of a Jewish candelabrum known as a menorah will be projected on the bridge's pylons, Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said.

Local government authorities had planned to project images of a dove with the word "peace," but that was changed after consultation with Jewish representatives.

"I continue to listen to the community to ensure the acknowledgement of the horrific attack at Bondi Beach during New Year's Eve is appropriate," Moore said in statement.

Exclusive: CIA carried out drone strike on port facility on Venezuelan coast

December 29, 2025
US President Donald Trump takes questions from journalists after announcing the US Navy's new Golden Fleet initiative, unveiling a new class of warships, at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, on December 22, 2025. President Donald Trump on December 22 announced a new class of heavily armed warships that will be named after himself -- an honor usually reserved for US leaders who have left office. Two of the Trump-class ships will be built initially but that number could grow substantially in the future, according to the president, who said they will be

The CIA carried out a drone strike earlier this month on a port facility on the coast of Venezuela, sources familiar with the matter told CNN, marking the first known US attack on a target inside that country.

The drone strike, the details of which have not been previously reported, targeted a remote dock on the Venezuelan coast that the US government believed was being used by the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua to store drugs and move them onto boats for onward shipping, the sources said. No one was present at the facility at the time it was struck, so there were no casualties, according to the sources.

Two sources said US Special Operations Forces provided intelligence support to the operation, underscoring their continued involvement in the region. But Col. Allie Weiskopf, a spokesperson for US Special Operations Command, denied that, saying, "Special Operations did not support this operation to include intel support."

President Donald Trump appeared to first acknowledge the attack in an interview last week that initially attracted little notice, though he offered few specifics, including when reportersasked directly about iton Monday.

The strike could significantly escalate tensions between the US and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who the US has been pressuring to step down through an aggressive military campaign.

The US has launched strikes destroyingmore than 30 boatsin the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean in what it has described as a counter-narcotics campaign, and Trump has ordered ablockade of sanctioned oil tankerscoming to and leaving Venezuela. Trump had also repeatedly threatened to carry out strikes inside Venezuela, but until the CIA attack earlier this month, the only known US strikes on Venezuelan targets were against the suspected drug trafficking boats in international waters.

The CIA declined to comment. CNN has asked the White House, US Special Operations Command, and Venezuela's Ministry of Communications and Ministry of Foreign Affairs for comment.

Trump acknowledged in an interview on December 26 that the US had knocked out some type of "big facility where ships come from" as he talked about his administration's campaign against Venezuela. Asked about it again on Monday, he said the US attacked "in the dock area where they load the boats up with drugs." But he declined to comment when asked whether the attack was conducted by the military or the CIA.

"So we hit all the boats, and now we hit the area," Trump said Monday. "It's the implementation area, that's where they implement, and that is no longer around."

One of the sources said the strike was successful in that it destroyed the facility and its boats, but described it as largely symbolic since it is just one of many port facilities used by drug traffickers leaving Venezuela. It also appeared to attract little to no attention, even inside the country, in real time.

Trump earlier this year expanded the CIA's authorities to conduct operations in Latin America, including inside Venezuela,CNN previously reported. But even then, the US military only had the legal authority to conduct strikes against suspected traffickers at sea, not on land, as CNN has reported.

The Trump administration has offered varying justifications for the campaign in Venezuela, which has involved a massive buildup of military assets in the Caribbean. Officials have pointed to a counter-narcotics imperative, but Trump's chief of staff Susie Wiles told Vanity Fair in an interview that the boat strikes were aimed at getting Maduro to "cry uncle." The Venezuelan leader has shown no signs of relinquishing power.

Top officialshave made clearpublicly and in briefings to lawmakers that they intend to continue targeting suspected drug smugglers using a similar playbook to the one used for killing terrorists during the global war on terror – a campaign in which the CIA played a crucial role, too. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has openly compared drug traffickers to al Qaeda.

"These narcoterrorists are the al Qaeda of our hemisphere," the secretary said at the Reagan National Defense Forum earlier this month. "And we are hunting them with the same sophistication and precision that we hunted al Qaeda."

This story has been updated with additional information from US Special Operations Command.

A look at Tiger Woods' life as he turns 50, in photos

Tiger Woods turned 50 on Tuesday, Dec. 30, a milestone for the golf great who has left a trail of brilliance on the course and struggles off the course.

He's the only player to hold all four majors at the same time and he's tied for the most PGA Tour wins at 82. He also has endured multiple surgeries on his legs and back, including his LA car crash in 2021, and a high-profile divorce in 2010.

But he remains a prominent figure. President Donald Trump awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2019. He's also in a relationship with Trump's former daughter-in-law.
