Good things in pop culture that got us through 2025

Was 2025 a bad year? The last 12 months brought mass federal job layoffs, destructive wildfires and natural disasters and AI-enabled deception. There were manyshocking deaths, fromPope Francisand Charlie Kirk to Gene Hackman and Rob Reiner. Not to mention the government shutdown, economic unease and global instability.

But enough with the bad stuff. You didn't click on this story for that. You're here for the good stuff, which we found in abundance through apop culture lens. That's the power of entertainment – to inspire us, lift us up and make us feel seen when we need it the most.

<p style=It's the most wonderful time of the year: The start of awards season!

The month of December kicked off on a star-studded note with the Gotham Awards, the first major awards ceremony of Oscar season. As the end of the year approaches, December will also see A-listers step out at the premieres of highly anticipated movies like "Avatar: Fire and Ash" and "Marty Supreme."

Timothée Chalamet, Kylie Jenner, Gwyneth Paltrow in the best celebrity photos from December

It's the most wonderful time of the year: The start of awards season! The month of December kicked off on a star-studded note with the Gotham Awards, the first major awards ceremony of Oscar season. As the end of the year approaches, December will also see A-listers step out at the premieres of highly anticipated movies like "Avatar: Fire and Ash" and "Marty Supreme."Scroll through for the best celebrity photos of December 2025 so far, starting with A$AP Rocky and Rihanna attending the Gotham Awards on Dec. 1, 2025, in New York City.

From stars' historic achievements to their outrageous shenanigans – and everything in between – here are the things that brought joy toUSA TODAY's entertainmentstaff in 2025, in no particular order.

  1. Charli XCX bringing the spirit of "Brat Summer" to the Grammy Awards with her electric performance.

  2. Watching Beyoncé watch her daughters Blue Ivy and Rumi with her on stage during the opening show of her Cowboy Carter tour with pride and tenderness. It was a fourth-wall-breaking reminder that despite her goddess stature in music, Bey most treasures being a mom.

  3. David Corenswet's new Man of Steel was the best dog dad putting off saving the world to save pooch Krypto in "Superman": "He's out there alone, and probably scared."

  4. Listening to the soundtrack of "KPop Demon Hunters" over and over, and not even because my kid wanted to. Because I did. And it was "Golden."

  5. Sabrina Carpenter releasing a "God-approved" album cover for "Man's Best Friend" after controversy.

  6. Meryl Streep, as her "Devil Wears Prada" character Miranda Priestly, uniting with Anna Wintour at Milan Fashion Week.

  7. Lindsay Lohan paying homage to her past characters on the "Freakier Friday" press tour, delivering a refreshing boost of Zillennial nostalgia.

  8. Karol G performing "Papasito" on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" (and teaching Jimmy Fallon the "Tropicoqueta" dance).

  9. Kate McKinnon explaining the mating habits of angler fish on "Hot Ones" in the most NSFW nature lesson ever.

  10. Paul McCartney playing for a few hundred fans at The Bowery Ballroom, proving that spirit defies age and true legends don't need the big stage.

  11. Austin Butler going viral for his dancing at Bad Bunny's Puerto Rico residency in an edibles-induced daze.

  12. Lady Gaga going on tour with The Mayhem Ball and reviving her theatrical pop spectacle.

  13. The Twilight Saga returning to theaters for the 20th anniversary of "Twilight" (the novel), reigniting the passion of Twihards everywhere.

  14. Pop princess and Disney Channel icon Hilary Duff making her much-anticipated musical comeback with her single "Mature."

  15. Jonathan Bailey making history as the first openly gay Sexiest Man Alive, sparking an explosion of queer joy.

  16. Benson Boone backflipping his way through a sold-out arena tour while still nailing Freddie Mercury-like vocals and making jumpsuits and mustaches look cool.

  17. Experiencing "The Wizard of Oz" at Sphere in Las Vegas. Judy Garland's crystalline delivery of "Over the Rainbow" on the Sphere's immaculate sound system coupled with the intensity of feeling like you're in that tornado that drops Dorothy in Munchkinland is absolutely inimitable.

  18. Latina icon Rita Moreno giving Bad Bunny his flowers at the Billboard Latin Music Awards by presenting him with the top Latin artist of the 21st century award.

  19. Selena Gomez marrying Benny Blanco and sharing wedding photos with fans.

  20. Taylor Swift revealing her engagement to Travis Kelce and breaking the internet (again).

  21. Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers performing a pitch-perfect parody of Aerosmith's "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" at Las Culturistas Culture Awards.

  22. Cole Escola becoming the first nonbinary actor to win best leading actor in a play at the Tony Awards.

  23. Jennifer Lopez teaming up with Linda Perry for the delightfully chaotic "What's Up?" x "Beez in The Trap" mashup trend.

  24. Dolly Parton playfully reassuring fans that she "ain't dead yet" after illness rumors.

  25. The entire original cast of "The Breakfast Club" reuniting at the C2E2 convention for the first time in 40 years.

  26. Cyndi Lauper hitting the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame stage with an all-women band and reunited Salt-N-Pepa to sing "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and saying about induction: "See what happens when you let the riff-raff in?"

  27. How do you outshine surviving the ire of Trump? Jimmy Kimmel's late-night eulogy to his friend and band-leader Cleto Escobedo III. Heartbreaking, inspiring, devastatingly perfect.

  28. Michelle Yeoh couldn't stop saying "Madame Morrible, flip it around Wicked Witch!" on every "Wicked" red carpet interview.

  29. Addison Rae came out of nowhere (well, TikTok, if that's your thing) to drop one of the most effortlessly confident, singular and transcendent debut pop LPs since the likes of Madonna and Britney Spears (yes, really). A new supreme rises.

  30. Two years after his death, the resolutely private and enigmatic Paul Reubens (aka Pee Wee Herman) let fans into his life and world via Matt Wolf's revelatory, moving two-part docuseries "Pee Wee as Himself."

  31. Role Model surprised us with a new "Sally" during every performance of "Sally, When the Wine Runs Out" on his "No Place Like Tour," including Natalie Portman, Al Roker, Hilary Duff, Bowen Yang and his mom.

  32. Beyoncé finally won album of the year at the Grammys for "Cowboy Carter" after four previous losses in the coveted category. She became the first Black woman to win the award since Lauryn Hill's "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" in 1999.

  33. The cast of "Stranger Things" said goodbye to the sci-fi juggernaut that launched their careers. Stars like Millie Bobby Brown and Finn Wolfhard shared heartfelt moments at the Season 5 premiere after growing up together over the past decade.

  34. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo made us cry by kicking off the Oscars with a stunning live performance, culminating in a chill-worthy rendition of "Defying Gravity."

  35. Ego Nwodim debuted her new stand-up character Miss Eggy on "Saturday Night Live" and accidentally prompted the crowd to curse, reminding us of the joys – and pitfalls – of live television.

  36. Marvel's most exciting 2025 release was, improbably, a five-and-a-half hour shot of a series of chairs, as the studio slowly revealed the cast of "Avengers: Doomsday" in a live stream that had us riveted for nearly an entire work day.

  37. Bill Burr and Billy Corgan addressed whether they're half-brothers in a hilariously awkward interview on Howie Mandel's podcast, sure to appeal to fans of cringe comedy everywhere.

  38. Horror icon Tony Todd delivered a posthumous, meta goodbye to fans in a beautiful unscripted scene in "Final Destination Bloodlines."

  39. Ana de Armas gave us action-movie life by lighting up bad guys like a champ in the memorable flamethrower faceoff from "John Wick" spinoff "Ballerina."

  40. Benicio del Toro hilariously acknowledged having had "a few small beers," and showed off some pre-arrest dance moves as Sergio St. Carlos in "One Battle After Another."

  41. All the music in "Sinners," was delectable, but the energy of Jack O'Connell's performance of "The Rocky Road to Dublin" amidst his new vampire creations while covered in blood was the heady climax of the film that kept playing in my head, and on social media, for long after.

  42. Rush choosing the ridiculously talented Anika Nilles to claim the hallowed drum stool of the late Neil Peart for the band's 2026 tour. Never doubt chicks with sticks.

  • Prince William became the Duke of Cornwall when King Charles ascended the throne in 2022

  • His income for his second year was $30 million, according to a 2025 report from the Duchy of Cornwall

  • The Duchy of Cornwall estate was established by King Edward III in 1337

Prince William's role as Prince of Wales comes with significant financial resources.

A report from June 2025 revealed Prince William received a hefty $30 million for his second year's income from the Duchy of Cornwall estate. The Duchy of Cornwall is a title and estate he inherited when his father,King Charles, ascended the throne in 2022.

The Duchy of Cornwall published itsIntegrated Annual Reportfor 2025 earlier this year, revealing a distributable surplus of £22.9 million ($30.9 million) for the 2024-2025 financial year, Prince William's second year as the Duke of Cornwall. This sum covers the official, charitable and private expenses of Prince William,Kate Middletonand their three children.

As a working member of the royal family, the Prince of Wales doesn't receive a traditional income. Instead, his annual expenses are largely covered by the Duchy of Cornwall, an estate established by King Edward III in 1337 to provide funds for the heir to the throne. This vast estate, worth over $1 billion, spans 130,000 acres across 23 counties in England and Wales and includes land, farms, houses and other assets to support the heir and their family.

When King Charles acceded to the throne in 2022, Prince Williambecame the new Duke of Cornwall and head of the estate.

Prince William is understood to pay income tax on the entire income he receives from the Duchy of Cornwall, after subtracting household expenses, which have not been specified.

AfterQueen Elizabethdied, a royal source said thatPrince William was "fully immersing himself" in his role as head of the Duchy of Cornwall. The Prince of Wales has made several stops in the estate since inheriting it, including anovernight trip in May 2024when he visited the site of the Duchy of Cornwall's innovative housing project aimed at addressing homelessness in Newquay.

In 2024, the report from Prince William's first full year in the role highlighted updates to his patronages, including a shift in his role at The Football Association. A dedicated football fan, he now serves as the patron of the FA, a position formerly held by his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth. William had been president of the FA since 2006, and the change reflects his senior role as Prince of Wales.

Additionally, Prince William assumed new patronages with the Welsh Guards Charity and the Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association, as well as becoming president of the Victoria Cross and George Cross Association. He also transitioned from president to patron of Fields in Trust.

Looking to the future, according to the 2025 Integrated Impact Report, the Duchy of Cornwall is still focused on "becoming a net zero estate by the end of 2032."

Eric Adams says Biden DOJ used 'lawfare' against him, compares treatment to Trump

Outgoing New York City MayorEric Adamsargued that the Biden administration's Justice Department engaged in "lawfare" against the former president's political opponents, including himself on corruption allegations and President Donald Trump over issues such as mishandling classified documents.

"I think what we have witnessed under President Biden's Justice Department, Americans should never have to live through that again," Adams said on Monday during an appearance on Fox News' "The Story."

"You saw everyday Americans who fought for the education of their children being put on watch lists, I think that you saw what happened with Charlie Kirk, when you saw the raiding of President Trump's home. Debates should have happened … I think that you're seeing the clear indication that theJustice Departmentunder the previous administration used lawfare to go after those who disagree with them," he added.

Eric Adams Warns Nyc 'Not Fine' After Mamdani's Win, Says If He Was Jewish He'd Be Worried For His Children

Asked if he felt as angry about the alleged weaponization of the DOJ before he was targeted, Adams said "personal experience allows us to see firsthand the abuse."

"I spent my entire life, not only as a police officer, but as a state senator and borough president fighting against injustices," Adams said. "There's a real history, a rich history, of me standing up and fighting what the criminal justice system should never be. Yes, that anger was there long before I was a target, but what I saw happen while I was the mayor is really deplorable, and we saw what happened toPresident Trump's family as well."

Nyc Mayor Eric Adams' Indictment Dismissed With Prejudice

"If you were to go back and look at my life story on criminal justice reform and not abuse, it goes back to being a young man who was abused at the hands of law enforcement," he continued. "And so I've always been a clear voice, and it really personalized it of what I was fighting for years because I experienced the lawfare myself."

Adams was indicted in September 2024 on federal corruption charges related to bribery, wire fraud and accepting illegal foreign campaign contributions from Turkish officials and businessmen. He pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The mayor has insisted that the case was politically motivated over his criticism of how the Biden administration handled illegal immigration, but prosecutors in the Southern District of New York said in court filings that the investigation began in September 2021, before Adams' public criticism of the government's immigration policies or his mayoral election win.

The charges were dropped earlier this year at the request of the Trump administration.

Adams is set to leave office at the turn of the new year, whenMayor-elect Zohran Mamdaniwill be sworn in.

Russia's nuclear-capable Oreshnik missiles have entered active service, Moscow says

Russia's nuclear-capable Oreshnik missiles have entered active service, Moscow says

Russia's nuclear-capableOreshnikmissile system has entered active service, Russia's Ministry of Defense said Tuesday, as negotiators continue to search for a breakthrough inpeace talks to end Moscow's warin Ukraine.

Troops held a brief ceremony to mark the occasion in neighboring Belarus where the missiles have been deployed, the ministry said. It did not say how many missiles had been deployed or give any other details.

Russian PresidentVladimir Putinsaid earlier in December that the Oreshnik would enter combat duty this month. He made the statement at a meeting with top Russian military officers, where he warned that Moscow will seek to extend its gains in Ukraine if Kyiv and its Western allies reject the Kremlin's demands inpeace talks.

The announcement comes at a critical time for Russia-Ukraine peace talks. U.S. President Donald Trumphosted Zelenskyyat hisFloridaresort Sunday and insisted that Kyiv and Moscow were "closer than ever before" to a peace settlement.

However, negotiators are still searching for a breakthrough on key issues, including whose forces withdraw from where in Ukraine and the fate of Ukraine's Russian-occupiedZaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, one of the 10 biggest in the world. Trump noted that the monthslong U.S.-led negotiations could still collapse.

Putin has sought to portray himself as negotiating from a position of strength as Ukrainian forces strain to keep back the bigger Russian army.

At a meeting with senior military officers Monday, Putin emphasized the need to create military buffer zones along the Russian border. He also claimed that Russian troops were advancing in the eastern Donetsk region of Ukraine and pressing their offensive in the southern Zaporizhzhia region.

Moscow first used the Oreshnik, which is Russian for "hazelnut tree," against Ukraine in November 2024, when it fired the experimental weapon at a factory in Dnipro that built missiles when Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union.

Putin has praised the Oreshnik's capabilities, saying that its multiple warheads, which plunge toward a target at speeds up to Mach 10, are immune to being intercepted.

He warned the West that Moscow could use it against Ukraine's NATO allies who've allowed Kyiv to use their longer-range missiles to strike inside Russia.

Russia's missile forces chief has also declared that the Oreshnik, which can carry conventional or nuclear warheads, has a range allowing it to reach all of Europe.

Intermediate-range missiles can fly between 500 to 5,500 kilometers (310 to 3,400 miles). Such weapons were banned under a Soviet-era treaty that Washington and Moscow abandoned in 2019.

China fires a warning to the U.S. and simulates Taiwan blockade; Trump says he's 'not worried'

China fires a warning to the U.S. and simulates Taiwan blockade; Trump says he's 'not worried'

HONG KONG —Chinafired rockets, massed assault ships and flew bombers aroundTaiwanon Tuesday, simulating a military blockade in an apparent warning to the United States against supporting the Beijing-claimed island.

The second day of thelarge-scale war games, called "Justice Mission 2025," saw the Chinese military encircle Taiwan in its biggest such exercise in eight months. PresidentDonald Trumpsaid Monday that Chinese PresidentXi Jinpinghad not told him about the exercises but that they did not worry him.

"They've been doing naval exercises for 20 years in that area," he told reporters. Analysts said the intense activity and accompanying rhetoric were aimed at demonstrating China's ability to pressure and isolate Taiwan, but also at deterring U.S. involvement.

Though the U.S. has no official relations with Taiwan, it is the self-governing democracy's most important international backer and is legally bound to provide it with defensive weapons. The issue has long strained U.S.-China relations, though it has taken a backseat under Trump amid a trade war between the world's two largest economies.

The Chinese Ministry of Defense says the two-day exercises are necessary to defend national security and territorial integrity and "serve as a stern warning against the 'Taiwan independence' separatist forces and interference by external powers."

China has not ruled out the use of force to seize Taiwan, an island of 23 million people. The Taiwanese government rejects Beijing's sovereignty claims and strongly condemned the exercise, criticizing China's military activities as "groundless and provocative." It said its forces were on high alert.

"China has disregarded the international community's expectations for peace, insisting instead on undermining regional stability through military intimidation," PresidentLai Ching-tesaid Tuesday in a Facebook post.

Though China did not specify a reason for the exercises, they are most likely in response to an$11.1 billion U.S. arms packagefor Taiwan that was announced this month and is thought to be the largest ever, said Ava Shen, a China associate at the Eurasia Group consulting firm.

"Because of this unprecedented amount, I think China felt that it needs to respond," she told NBC News in a phone interview.

Chinese Foreign MinisterWang Yisaid Tuesday that Beijing must "resolutely oppose and forcefully counter" actions such as the U.S. arms package.

Chinese ground forces on Tuesday conducted long-range live-fire drills in waters north of Taiwan that "achieved desired effects," said Senior Capt. Li Xi, spokesperson for the People's Liberation Army's Eastern Theater Command.

The command said it used bomber aircraft and warships to conduct drills that included strikes on maritime targets as well as anti-air and anti-submarine operations in waters to the north and south of Taiwan. The drills "tested capabilities of sea-air coordination and integrated blockade and control," it said.

According to Chinese state media, the Type 075 amphibious assault ship was also deployed for the first time.

In addition to the simulated blockade and joint combat readiness, this week's drill includes a new focus on "all-dimensional deterrence outside the island chain," Shen said, a reference to deterring U.S. military involvement in a potential Taiwan invasion.

U.S.-China relations are in a state of truce after Trump and Ximet in South Koreain October, during which they agreed to a one-year extension of lower reciprocal tariffs. Trump has said he will visit China in April, followed by a visit to the U.S. by Xi later in the year.

Both leaders "are invested in maintaining stable relations," Shen said, and China's latest exercises are unlikely to change that.

Though Trump sees Taiwan as an "element" of U.S.-China relations, it is not his main concern, she said.

"His top priority is to reach some kind of trade agreement with China, and he doesn't want any other thing to get in the middle of that," Shen said.

Trump has notably refrained from expressing public support forJapanafter its prime minister,Sanae Takaichi, outraged Beijing last month by saying that a Chinese attack on Taiwan couldprompt a Japanese military response.

Similarly, Beijing initially responded to the new U.S. arms package for Taiwan withsanctions on 20 U.S. defense-related companies and 10 executivesthat are mostly symbolic.

Taiwan's Ministry of National Defensesaid Tuesday on Xthat it had detected 130 Chinese military aircraft and 22 naval and coast guard vessels in the 24 hours to 6 a.m.

This is China's first major exercise around Taiwan since "Strait Thunder," atwo-day operation held in Aprilafter Lai called China a "foreign hostile force."

China also held two major exercises last year called "Joint Sword" — one after Lai wasinaugurated in Mayand one after hisfirst National Day speechin October.

It is China's sixth major round of war games since 2022, whenNancy Pelosi, the House Speaker at the time, visited Taiwanover Beijing's objections. During those exercises China fired missiles over Taiwan, which it has not done so far this time.

But this is the first time since 2022 that China announced "maritime exclusion zones" through which planes and boats were not allowed to pass during the live-fire drills on Tuesday. Five of the seven zones overlap with Taiwan's 12-nautical-mile territorial waters, according to Eurasia Group.

"The overall trend is very clear, which is that China is trying to push the boundary of how close can it get its military planes and vessels to Taiwan," Shen said.

While this week's exercise is in line with China's intensifying military pressure on Taiwan, it should not be viewed as a sign that China plans a full-on attack on the island in the near future, she said.

"I think a Chinese invasion of Taiwan still remains very unlikely," Shen said. "The primary objective of this exercise is for China to warn the U.S. about its further support of Taiwan."
